Crowd Management
Crowd Dynamics were commissioned by Merseyside Rail to study the effect of ticket changes on Automatic Ticket Gates (ATGs) in 8 stations within the Merseyrail Network:
• Liverpool Central Station
• Lime Street Underground Station
• Liverpool South Parkway Station
• Moorfields Station
• Conway Park Station
• Hamilton Square Station
• James Street Station
• Southport Station
Video surveys were conducted and the potential effect analysed of altering the TRIO ticket type to be able to pass through ATGs rather than be checked manually by staff at the Wide Aisle Gates (WAGs). Suitable crowd safety procedures were recommended; in particular ‘plunge marker’ locations where gates can be opened if crowding reaches a certain level in the stations. Potential design optimisations that could be considered were also identified.
